Intersegmental Traction

The roller table. It looks simple. But it does more for your spine than you'd expect.

What the Roller Table Actually Does

Intersegmental traction -- IST for short -- is a motorized table with rollers that travel up and down your spine. You lie on your back, and the rollers gently lift and stretch each vertebral segment as they pass underneath. It's passive, comfortable, and surprisingly effective.

The purpose is simple: restore motion to individual spinal segments. When a joint in your spine hasn't been moving properly -- whether from an injury, posture habits, or degeneration -- the surrounding tissues tighten up and the joint gets stiffer. IST breaks that cycle by gently mobilizing each segment without you having to do anything.

We use it frequently at both our Jacksonville and Orange Park locations as part of a complete treatment session. It warms up your spine before adjustments, improves disc health, and gives your muscles a chance to relax. Most patients look forward to it -- it's the best 10 minutes of their day.

Benefits of Intersegmental Traction

Restores Spinal Motion

The rollers gently move each vertebra through its natural range of motion. Joints that have been stuck or restricted start moving again -- gradually, safely, and without force.

Preps Your Spine for Adjustment

We often use the roller table before your adjustment. It loosens the muscles, mobilizes the joints, and makes the adjustment easier and more effective. Think of it as a warm-up for your spine.

Improves Disc Hydration

Spinal discs don't have their own blood supply. They get nutrients through motion -- a process called imbibition. The roller table gently pumps fluid into the discs, keeping them hydrated and healthy.

Relaxes Tight Muscles

The rhythmic motion of the rollers releases tension in the paraspinal muscles along your spine. Patients consistently say it's one of the most relaxing parts of their visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

You lie face-up on a table with rollers underneath. The rollers travel slowly up and down your spine, lifting and stretching each segment gently. Most patients describe it as a deep, relaxing massage. Plenty of people close their eyes. Some fall asleep. It's that comfortable.

Very safe. It's a passive therapy -- you're just lying there while the table does the work. The pressure and speed are adjustable. We set it to your comfort level. It's appropriate for almost all patients, including elderly patients and those with acute pain.

Typically 5 to 10 minutes. It's usually done as part of your chiropractic visit -- either before or after your adjustment. Short, but the effects compound over time.

They complement each other. The roller table mobilizes and relaxes the area. The adjustment provides the specific correction. Together, they're more effective than either one alone. Think of IST as making your adjustment work better and hold longer.
