Electrical Stimulation (E-Stim)

Pain relief, muscle activation, and faster healing -- all without medication.

How Electrical Stimulation Works

Electrical stimulation uses controlled electrical currents delivered through electrode pads placed on your skin. Depending on the type and settings, it can block pain signals, contract muscles, reduce inflammation, or promote tissue healing. It's been used in clinical settings for decades -- and for good reason. It works.

At Meridian, we use e-stim as a complement to chiropractic adjustments, not a replacement. It helps reduce pain and spasm before or after your adjustment, accelerates recovery between visits, and targets areas that manual therapy alone can't fully address.

The sensation is mild -- a tingling or gentle pulsing that most patients find comfortable. We adjust the intensity to your preference. Sessions are typically 10 to 15 minutes, and most patients feel noticeably better when the pads come off.

Types of E-Stim We Use

Different modalities for different goals. We choose the right one based on your condition.

01

TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation)

Targets sensory nerves to reduce pain signals. The mild electrical current essentially overrides pain messages before they reach your brain. Effective for acute and chronic pain alike.

02

EMS (Electrical Muscle Stimulation)

Targets muscles directly to cause contraction. Useful for strengthening muscles that have weakened from disuse, reducing spasm, and improving circulation to injured areas.

03

Interferential Current (IFC)

Uses two crossing currents that penetrate deeper than standard TENS. Reaches muscles and tissues that surface-level stimulation can't touch. Excellent for deep inflammation and chronic pain patterns.

Conditions We Treat with E-Stim

Acute and chronic back painNeck pain and stiffnessMuscle spasmsPost-injury inflammationSciatica and radiating nerve painJoint pain and arthritisSports injuries and strainsPost-surgical recovery support

Frequently Asked Questions

No. You'll feel a tingling or buzzing sensation that's easily adjustable. We control the intensity -- you tell us what feels right. Most patients find it comfortable and relaxing. Some describe it as a gentle pulsing or mild muscle twitch.

Typically 10 to 15 minutes, applied as part of your chiropractic visit. The pads go on, you relax, and the machine does the work. Short enough to fit into any appointment, effective enough to make a real difference.

Very safe when applied by trained practitioners. There are a few contraindications -- patients with pacemakers, active cancer over the treatment site, or pregnancy over the abdomen should not use e-stim. We screen for all of these before treatment.

Over-the-counter TENS units can provide temporary relief, but they're limited in what they can do. Clinical-grade units penetrate deeper, offer more modality options (IFC, EMS), and are applied with professional guidance to the right areas. The two aren't comparable.
